Hello,
Welcome to week 3 of Winter CSA. I think we have officially hit hot tea weather. The temps are cool and the wind blusters…although, it is supposed to warm up now this week. Even with all the farm stuff going on, the winter to-do list is out and we are slowly starting to check things off. Host Friendsgiving gathering, check. Go to the dentist, check. Start gathering basket materials, check. Begin holiday planning, check. Dig into office work…..not yet. Well, we have all winter, right? How about, stop working at 3pm and watch TV or play with the cats (who keep sneaking into the house). Or, how about dinner with another farmer friend. How about cooking all morning long because you can. Or, waking up and doing yoga in the morning.
This week I read an article in Natural Awakenings about burnout. It reminded me that our bodies evolved to need and want rest this time of year. With a world designed to never stop, cluttered with electric lights, and a Starbucks at every corner, our culture has conned us into thinking that there is something wrong with us if we can’t keep up in winter. Let’s not forget FOMO, fueled by social media, making it even harder to take a step back. But what would it look like if we learned to mindfully say no to the hustle and bustle and just made time to rest?
Even as we slow down and try to make time to rest out on the farm, we are out harvesting what is still thriving in the fields. Kale is still rocking it along with spinach and some Asian greens. We also went and picked up some celeriac and fennel from our good friends at Tipi Produce. Keep those big orders coming while the getting is good. And remember we can take care of November’s holiday pie. Get your pre-order in by the 16th.
Ohh, and by the way, thank you for letting us know if something isn’t quite right with your order. It is the only way we can make it right or make changes to do better. We have a new winter pack person this year, so he is still learning. Your feedback helps us help him.
A Few Things:
- IN SUMMARY: It is hot tea season. Can we mindfully say no to the hustle and bustle of our lives and make space to honor how our bodies have evolved to rest in the winter?
- WINTER KALE SALAD RECIPE: This is one of my favorites. I change it up based on what I have in the fridge, often using dried cranberries instead of pomegranate and then whatever veggies I have lots of (radish, kohlrabi, broccoli, carrot, etc). I love it with the Autumn Frost Butternut squash. (Squash Hack… I slice mine in half, gut it, and then slice the halves into 1-inch sections. I cover them in oil and roast like that. When it comes out, I cut the flesh away from the skin and toss it into my salad.)
- MARK YOUR CALENDAR: For you planners out there, NO DELIVERY: December 23rd and 24th.

HACKS AND ORDERING TRICKS:
- If the product selection is not showing in organized groups, you are likely in the “Previously Ordered” section. Scroll down to all products and it will be easier to navigate. You can always X out these items each week to keep this section manageable.
- If products have a locked sign on them, you likely need to change your pick-up location. Click on the lock to see where this item is available.
- If you cannot see products, contact the farm.
- As a member with credits, when you place your order, FarmMatch will tell you it is going to charge your credit card, because that is what it is programmed to do, as most farms are not issuing credits at the beginning of the season like we are. They are just selling outright to their customers. The program will apply your credits first, making your total due $0. So, your card will get charged $0 each week, up until you have used up all your credits.
