Week 11. Every Sunday, the first thing I do, after my morning coffee, is issue credits to folks that came out to volunteer or fulfill their worker share shift for the week. It is such a humbling and heartwarming activity as I recall all the helpers that came out, making this farm able to do what it does. Volunteers and worker shares help to pack the orders each week, weed, trim the dried garlic, wash the totes, run the market stand, and more. Many of these jobs take place out of the fields, which allows our primary crew more time in the fields to grow and harvest the food. The relationships that have been built from asking for help out here turns me into a puddle of mush when I think about it.  We are so grateful to have this kind of community support. Thank you to all of you that help in this way.

Blueberries are here for another week, so if you missed out last week, or already ate yours like we did, you get another week to grab some.  And, go ahead and tell your friends, cause we sell blueberries to non-members too.  They can just go right to our website and click on online orders.

As August begins to wane, I start to feel the fatigue that comes with going non-stop all summer. While I wonder how the summer went by so quickly, I am still tired. After years of hitting that burn-out point right around this time of year, we have learned how valuable it is to build in a bit of a break. Remember that we do not take CSA orders or go to the farmers market August 29th and 30th. This will give us the opportunity to prepare for fall and winter and shift our routine for a week, taking a break from those weekly deadlines that bring with them fatigue and burn-out.  But, the farm won’t stop, especially the plants.  They keep on growing.  So, we will have tomato boxes for sale out here at the farm that week along with a few other things that just go and go.

Lastly, we would like to acknowledge that parts of Milwaukee had a tough week last week with all the rain.  Although we got more than normal out here, it doesn’t come close to what some of you folks experienced. If you are suffering financial hardship because of this flooding, please let us know. We have food equity funds available to help make food more available to you from our program.

A Few Things:

  • IN SUMMARY: Blueberries are here for another week!  Thank you to everyone that volunteers with us each week. We couldn’t make this farm happen without you.
  • MARK YOUR CALENDAR: No CSA delivery/pick-up on August 29th and 30th.
  • TOMATO CANNING BOXES: Believe it our not, I am selling pretty much all the tomatoes we can produce this year. That is a good problem to have. If you are hoping for a canning box, remember at the end of August when we don’t have CSA delivery, you can come on out to the farm to get your canning boxes (July 28th – Aug 2nd)
  • Tomato cucumber salsa:  One of our favorite summer treats is fresh salsa.  I make one very similar to this one that I ferment on the countertop for a couple of days to make it even tastier. But, we love it fresh too (cause sometimes, we just can’t wait for it to ferment). This time of year is perfect for it and when the bell peppers come in full force, I go ahead and add those to it too.

HACKS AND ORDERING TRICKS:

  • If the product selection is not display in organized groups, you are likely in the “Previously Ordered” section. Scroll down to all products and it will be easier to navigate. You can always X out these items each week to keep this section manageable.
  • If products have a locked sign on them, you likely need to change your pick-up location. Click on the lock to see where this item is available.
  • If you cannot see products, contact the farm.
  • As a member with credits, when you place your order, FarmMatch will tell you it is going to charge your credit card, because that is what it is programmed to do, as most farms are not issuing credits at the beginning of the season like we are. They are just selling outright to their customers. The program will apply your credits first, making your total due $0. So, your card will get charged $0 each week, up until you have used up all your credits.
