Week 14. And just that quickly, peak season begins to wane. The tomatoes and eggplant have slowed to a crawl and will likely be removed from the field in the next couple weeks. The beans replenish slower. The greens like chard and kale grow slower. The basil will give it up soon. Cukes are starting to dip out. The summer squash is reminding us that it is nearly not summer.

We still have plenty of fun things to carry us through our final 6 weeks. More winter squash and potatoes to come.  We will be picking the first of the winter turnips and winter Alpine radish this week. We are starting to see the purple cabbage mature. The deer got into the lettuce, so I am going to have to limit you a bit this week, but we have more plantings sizing up as we speak. Mizuna is a delicious mild mustard green that works great in a salad or stir-fried. And, arugula and spinach are both on their way soon. Bok choy and tatsoi are fun for stir-frying and soup. Try something new as we move into late season crops.

As the fields slow down, you will start to see us limit you on some items. When they grow slower we need to make sure there is enough for everyone to have some.  But, we keep replenishing our pantry shelves with fun items from our other vendors too. Give the traditional kraut a try this week or grab a hot sauce to warm things up as the nights start to cool. Salmon patties are restocked and make a delicious and quick weeknight dinner.  And another new item from the cheese world….St Germain aged goat cheese. We continue to offer many hyper-local items with clean ingredients lists to help keep your bellies full.

Thanks,

A Few Things:

  • IN SUMMARY: Peak season is starting to wind down, but there are still lots of fun things to fill your bellies during the last 6 weeks.
  • MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The final summer CSA delivery/pick-up is October24th and 25th.  Get ready to sign up for our Winter program to extend your season through the end of February….coming soon.
  • HOW MANY CREDITS DO YOU HAVE LEFT?: Remember credits go away at the end of October, so you have to use them. Selection might go down and limits go up this time of year, so ordering weekly gets the best results.  Stocking up with really big orders is hard for our small farm to accommodate.  It makes inventory control a challenge and puts strain on our delivery driver (who has both space and time limits on a given day).  Our program is designed to provide our members food on a regular basis over about 20 weeks.
  • BLAKESVILLE BREAMERY: You will start seeing more from these folks in the coming weeks.  Located in Port Washington, WI, you will love their small batch cheeses. “Our cheesemaking facility began production in the summer of 2020. We are a farmstead creamery, meaning that our cheeses are made by hand on the same farm where our animals are raised and their milk is collected.”
  • DELICATA: Use these sooner than later. This is the earliest of winter squash to become available, but ours got hit with a lot of squash bugs this year. Because of that, there are tiny little wounds in the skin, making it not hold well, so it needs to be eaten sooner than later.

HACKS AND ORDERING TRICKS:

  • If the product selection is not display in organized groups, you are likely in the “Previously Ordered” section. Scroll down to all products and it will be easier to navigate. You can always X out these items each week to keep this section manageable.
  • If products have a locked sign on them, you likely need to change your pick-up location. Click on the lock to see where this item is available.
  • If you cannot see products, contact the farm.
  • As a member with credits, when you place your order, FarmMatch will tell you it is going to charge your credit card, because that is what it is programmed to do, as most farms are not issuing credits at the beginning of the season like we are. They are just selling outright to their customers. The program will apply your credits first, making your total due $0. So, your card will get charged $0 each week, up until you have used up all your credits.
