Week 17. It might not feel like the fall season, but it is. The cooler nights and decrease in daylight hours show in the fields. The greens love it. The hot season summer things start checking out. When my crew once spent a part of nearly every week seeding and transplanting, now we spend a part of every week breaking down summer plantings, pulling out squash, cucumber, or tomato plantings. Removing black fabric from the fields is now a regular thing. We have even started to harvest some of the storage crops like turnips and winter radish. Speaking of, we have red king winter radish on the CSA list this week. It is a yummy mild radish, much larger than classic little round radish, being in the daikon family. It is great for fall salads and slaws and also loves to be pickled. With any luck everyone’s favorite brassica, Romanesco, the green fractaled cauliflower looking veggie, will produce soon. Our winter green cabbage is sizing up and should be ready soon. And we started picking on the last plantings of fennel and napa cabbage this week.
I see some folks have used all their credits for the season! That is awesome. Don’t worry, you still get to order and pay as you go (from a slightly limited menu). If you haven’t used all your credits, put on your math brain and figure out how to make it happen in the next 3 orders. Your last week will be the 24th and 25th of October. If your heart feels heavy and you are wishing you could keep ordering, there is still time to sign up for the winter program but we are filling quickly. I have about 15 slots left before we call it full for the season.
As fall starts to show its true face in the next few weeks Farmer Tim and I start thinking about things like sleeping in on Saturday morning and scheduling holiday get-togethers with family and friends. Farmer Tim spends more of his time gathering and cutting wood for heat this winter. Although we still do plenty of farming things all winter long, Farmer Tim will spend more time trading and selling sports cards (a fun pastime that he has taken up in the last couple of years) and if the weather cooperates, maybe he will get to ice fish this year. I am already collecting natural material that I can practice weaving with this winter (a fun hobby I took up a couple years ago). What things do you look forward to doing in the winter months?

HACKS AND ORDERING TRICKS:
- If the product selection is not display in organized groups, you are likely in the “Previously Ordered” section. Scroll down to all products and it will be easier to navigate. You can always X out these items each week to keep this section manageable.
- If products have a locked sign on them, you likely need to change your pick-up location. Click on the lock to see where this item is available.
- If you cannot see products, contact the farm.
- As a member with credits, when you place your order, FarmMatch will tell you it is going to charge your credit card, because that is what it is programmed to do, as most farms are not issuing credits at the beginning of the season like we are. They are just selling outright to their customers. The program will apply your credits first, making your total due $0. So, your card will get charged $0 each week, up until you have used up all your credits.
