Hello,

Week 5.  Did you folks enjoy your week off? Sometimes just a change in routine, even if you are still busy, is really nice. It seems to reset the senses and help one be grounded and aware. Doing this out on the farm was important for me. It helped me slow down a bit. I walked the fields with a different purpose and different perspective.  I enjoyed my space in different ways. Although I didn’t leave and I still worked in the fields, that change of pace fed my soul and helped get us on track for late summer and even get a glimpse of what fall will be like.

Every year, when we take off for the 4th, I do have a moment where I think, gosh, this is just when the summer crops are starting to explode, maybe we shouldn’t. But, we should. We need this for both short and long-term mental health.  We need it to help support a strong healthy season all the way to November.  So, despite the fact that the snap peas exploded this week and we have zucchini coming out of our ears, I remind myself, we do need to take a short pause and it is ok.

For those that came out to the farm this weekend and shopped at our on-site market stand, Thank you. It was so nice to see your faces, visit and catch up, and invite you to come on out and see the fields. This also helped us sell some of the food that didn’t stop growing in the field just because we took a bit of a break.

Lastly, just a quick note about our meat sale for July. We do our best to manage a meat inventory so that what we offer you is less than 12 months old, although our meat is totally safe and delicious longer than that.  We are, however, finding ourselves long on some of the less popular cuts right now, especially in beef. You will notice we have a number of cuts on sale and marked as SHORT DATE SALE. These are going to be 10 to 14 months old cuts. Enjoy the savings.

A Few Things:

  • IN SUMMARY: A break is good. Thanks to those of you that came for a visit this weekend. Check out our meat sale.
  • SHORT DATE MEAT SALE: We find ourselves long on some of the less common/popular cuts right now, especially in beef. We are having a SHORT DATE SALE this July. These are going to be 10 to 14 months old cuts.
  • Crop Highlight: Fennel. Although my favorite way to use fennel is in soup, in the summer it is nice to lighten it up and enjoy it fresh. It loves being paired with citrus flavors. The first batch of fennel is ready just in time for summer salads. Here is a fun recipe for something light and refreshing. Sicilian Fennel Salad.
  • TOMATO UPDATES: You can always take a look at our tomato photo updates on our instagram account.  We do one every 7 to 10 days, just because it is fun to watch their progress.  And, let’s face it, they tend to be the highlight of summer for many of us. Right now, our plants in the hoophouse are about chest high and packed with big green tomatoes. Field tomatoes are not that tall, but looking healthy, happy, pruned, and trellised (it has been a few years since I could say we were keeping up on both the field and tunnel plants…Yeah!).  Big thanks to our new full time employee, Joe.  He has been a tremendous help, and brought some much needed speed, strength, and experience to the team.

HACKS AND ORDERING TRICKS:

  • If the product selection is not display in organized groups, you are likely in the “Previously Ordered” section. Scroll down to all products and it will be easier to navigate. You can always X out these items each week to keep this section manageable.
  • If products have a locked sign on them, you likely need to change your pick-up location. Click on the lock to see where this item is available.
  • If you cannot see products, contact the farm.
  • As a member with credits, when you place your order, FarmMatch will tell you it is going to charge your credit card, because that is what it is programmed to do, as most farms are not issuing credits at the beginning of the season like we are. They are just selling outright to their customers. The program will apply your credits first, making your total due $0. So, your card will get charged $0 each week, up until you have used up all your credits.
